The Government of British Columbia has recently proposed new regulations for data centers, AI and crypto mining as part of its Energy Statutes Amendment Act. As a proud Canadian distribution grid modernization company, Tantalus stands ready to assist utilities and their communities through the transitions ahead. As has been noted by CBC (article linked below), these new regulations proposed would: - Permanently ban crypto mining from connecting to the electric grid in British Columbia - Initiate a competitive bidding process in early 2026 for data centers seeking to access to electricity from the grid in British Columbia - Cap allocations of electricity for AI projects at 300 megawatts and 100 megawatts for other data centers The goal, clearly, is to preserve the reliability and stability of the grid, even as demand for electricity skyrockets in connection with the continued usage of AI, crypto mining, and other energy-intensive use cases. This is just part of a broader effort to be especially intentional with how electricity is allocated in Canada as AI, crypto mining and data centers consume more and more electricity. Over the summer, Ontario enacted Bill 40 to help preserve affordable electricity in the face of skyrocketing demand. Last December, the Canadian federal government allocated C$2B over five years to help support energy-efficient AI infrastructure. In short, the quantum leaps forward in computing now require an accelerated effort to modernize the distribution grid in Canada to keep pace. This means utilities and regulatory bodies across Canada will need even more visibility, command and control over their distribution grids. And that’s what Tantalus has been helping utilities across North America with for more than 30 years. We applaud the efforts of Canadian regulators to make sure that the distribution grid remains reliable, resilient, and affordable. Canada, and indeed the rest of the world, needs to adapt to the new realities of AI, data centers, and their impact on our energy infrastructure. https://lnkd.in/eRscFCDK

AMI systems are only as powerful as the people who know how to use them. The Northwest Electric Meter School is the perfect place to empower both the grid, and those that keep them running. Taking place September 8–12 in Shoreline, WA, NWEMS brings together experts, training, and community. It’s also a chance to connect with Tantalus’s own Mary Sullivan and discuss how utilities can strengthen their own capabilities with AMI. Register below to take AMI further. https://lnkd.in/g-946gHS #grid #smartgrid #gridmodernization #utilities #utilitiesindustry
