Definitely a case of all that glisters must be gold in market-land, with mining companies giving a helping hand to bourses in Canada and London as the spot gold price holds above US$2,500 an ounce. Our local would-be miner Santana Minerals Ltd enjoyed a surge yesterday when the level got breached. Wall Street’s enjoying a firm start to the week as everyone gazes into the crystal ball ahead of the central banking symposium in Jackson Hole, where Fed chair Jerome Powell’s words of wisdom will be pored over with a fine tooth comb… every pause… every gesture. Oh, and elsewhere in central bank land South Korea, Indonesia and Thailand are all reviewing their key rates this week. In the meantime, gold is holding up and the greenback’s off the boil which has seen the kiwi nip above 61 US cts for the first time in a month. AMD was out with its chequebook, spending US$4.9 billion on ZT Systems, but it doesn’t want the server manufacturing business – which it plans to sell – rather it’s keen on the 1,000 “world class engineers”. (Markets with Madison’s double-episode on Infratil is well worth a look for some smart takes on servicing the AI boom.) The Estée Lauder Companies Inc.’s earnings offered another warning about the gloom of Chinese consumers, while BlueScope pointed to the flood of steel exports coming from China that was shrinking margins – Fletcher Building and Steel & Tube Holdings Ltd beware. Alphabet Inc. was on the up today as Google celebrated its 20th anniversary of its public listing and cyber security Palo Alto Networks is due to report after the bell. Locally, we’ve got The Real Estate Institute of New Zealand (REINZ) house price figures and trade data to reaffirm how tough the current economic conditions are (and reinforce the prospect of more rate cuts to come). Mercury NZ is due to report, while the Commerce Commission’s report on personal banking is on the cards to come out today. Expect much arm-waving about both.

If I was to read the following sentence out loud: "as you know from recent headlines, the _____ government has yet again narrowly avoided a financial crisis that impacts the whole country by agreeing to pass a bill putting into law, budget/tax measures set to expire again..." You might be excused for thinking the missing word was "U.S." government and it had to do with President Joe Biden signing a bill into law Saturday that averted a government shutdown, bringing a final close to days of upheaval (https://lnkd.in/g2MkUJPR). But instead, I would be referring to the post below from the Prospectors & Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) confirming that yet again Canada’s Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC), a coveted centerpiece of competitiveness in attracting new risk capital to early-stage explorers for more than two decades, is set to expire in spring 2025. Both the time and opportunity to renew this vital incentive are slipping away. It seems that year after year the industry has to ask again for the same support to renew something that makes Canada's mining sector competitive.

What a great way to finish out the year. Thank you Cali Van Zant for the opportunity to talk with you on the Exploring Mining Podcast with Investorideas.com- News that inspires big investing ideas. Looking back over the last year and listening to some of the guests you have had on the show, if we could take the main themes and combine them into a short list of New Year's resolutions, we would have a heck of a start towards taking advantage of the opportunity in front of us. Of course we can't make everyone happy, but my one wish for 2025 is that this time next year we aren't sitting around complaining that we have made no progress. Highlights of the advice I will be giving in 2025: 3 things that can’t be changed about a mining project: ⛏️ The mine is where the mine is (i.e. you can't move it) ⛏️ Mines and supporting infrastructure take a long time to build no matter where you are ⛏️ Mines are capital intensive, depending on capital cycles, that is a big or small problem 3 things that can be changed about a mining project: ⛏️ Resource nationalism – all governments globally are suffering from a debt crisis because of the pandemic spend and need to raise money, therefore you have to change the narrative to it not being a cash grab with no benefits, instead it’s a partnership where you negotiate increased benefits for the increased cost ⛏️ The energy transition problem gives mining companies a chance to portray themselves as part of the solution to a problem (where will all the materials needed for the energy transition come from) ⛏️ Mining has had a bad reputation with everyone – general public, young people. That can be changed. Where else are you going to get high paying, tech intense jobs? There are two kinds of resource nationalism you have to manage: ⛏️ Internal resource nationalism is what we are seeing in Chili where a country is saying we have taken over the industry and will make all the profit ⛏️ External resource nationalism is where a country like Indonesia is saying we control global supply and will decide who is allowed to buy from us

The macro set-up in the energy sector is as compelling as it gets. Another great article and great share from Rob Karpati about our collective efforts to "democratize" access to finance for ASM projects globally but to also create better opportunities for the mining sector at the intersection of ASM / LSM. What are investing in when you invest in mining - "Everything & Nothing" at the same time. Mining is complex and it needs better financial solutions that will focus on specific "assets class" - nature, decarbonization, brownfield assets, tailing, gender, indigenous, energy, processing, offtake agreements, equipment, technology, and the list goes on. Time is definitely not on our (humanity) side to make this important energy transition as efficient as possible. It's a strong call for collaboration to work on a common Alternative Digital & Regulated Marketplace for the mining sector and its value chain. Financial innovation will be crucial to ensure a fair green and sustainable transition. #mining #criticalminerals

A provincial mining industry leader says B.C. could end up profiting from trade tensions between China and the United States over critical minerals. Michael Goehring, president and chief executive officer of the Mining Association of British Columbia, said Wednesday, (Dec. 4), that China's decision to ban exports of certain critical minerals and rare earths to the United States demonstrates why it is "vital" for Canada and the U.S. to reduce their dependence on authoritarian regimes for critical mineral supplies and mineral processing. https://lnkd.in/dPu3vAN9

📢 PDAC warns mineral sector at risk as METC nears expiry Government business has come to a standstill under Parliament’s prorogation, prompting the Prospectors and Developers Association of Canada (PDAC) to sound the alarm over the critical issues facing Canada’s mineral sector. Chief among these is the Mineral Exploration Tax Credit (METC), which is set to expire in March. Since its introduction in 2000, the METC has been indispensable to mineral exploration across the country—generating more than $20 billion in equity financing, creating jobs, supporting remote and Indigenous communities, and enabling major discoveries that feed into Canada’s broader mining ecosystem. The METC does not require any direct outlay of public funds and stands as one of the most productive federal government programs in existence. PDAC, which works closely with all political parties to advance the industry’s interests, urgently calls on all members of Parliament to renew the METC. With exploration investment already in decline, allowing the tax credit to lapse would undermine every segment of Canada’s mineral sector—from coast to coast to coast. Parliament must also pass the Clean Tech Manufacturing Investment Tax Credit into law and reject any increase to the capital gains inclusion rate. Taking swift action on these measures is crucial to safeguarding Canada’s competitiveness, supporting well-paying jobs, and ensuring the long-term resilience of our mineral exploration and development sector.

Barrick Gold Corporation censored Ekō 's shareholder proposal presentation, which I recorded, and Jan Morrill, Catherine Coumans of MiningWatch Canada, and Argentina's affected community members' questions during its 2024 AGM. Barrick's claim that the proposal presentation "intended to advance the personal grievance against the company rather than to present the shareholder proposal" is baseless. It shows the corporation's discriminatory and suppressing attitude towards those who call out the harm it's causing and seek accountability. Here is Niall McGee's report for The Globe and Mail "One of the items that went in front of shareholders for a vote on Tuesday was a proposal for a third-party audit of the impact of Barrick’s current and proposed mines on local water systems. The proposal was championed by Ekō, a Washington-based activist group whose objective is to rein in the power of large corporations. Ekō said that rules should have permitted the group to give a presentation at the meeting to explain the need for the measure to bring further scrutiny to Barrick’s water practices. But Ekō said that Barrick rejected the presentation it had recorded for the meeting and told it that a bare-bones reading of the proposal was all that would be permitted. Lacey Kohlmoos, senior campaign manager with Ekō, said in a statement that she’d never heard of a company censoring a shareholder proposal presentation before. Ekō has presented proposals at shareholder meetings for Meta Platforms, Alphabet and Apple. “Barrick Gold will do everything in its power to silence the voices of community members calling out the company for doing harm,” she added. The lack of a physical gathering for Barrick’s AGM also meant that human-rights protesters didn’t have an obvious location in which to gather, and any aggrieved stakeholders had no avenue in which to directly confront Barrick’s board of directors. Last year, the in-person part of Barrick’s AGM took place at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto’s financial district. It featured a heated discussion between Mr. Bristow and Lateef Johar #Baloch, a human-rights activist who raised questions about Barrick’s #RekoDiq project in [#Balochistan]. “It was quite a dramatic exchange,” Ms. Coumans said. “I very much think that last year’s experience made them decide, ‘Hey, we don’t want that any more.’”
