A recent vendor briefing reminded me of a story I’ve been meaning to tell—the journey of AIOps and what it reveals about how we evaluate technology. In 2018, I published a report on key trends shaping IT operations. The #1 takeaway? “Context is king.” Organizations were collecting more monitoring data than ever—but IT performance wasn’t improving. A group of vendors emerged to solve this by correlating data, making it actionable, and applying intelligent automation. They needed a category. First, they tried ITOA (IT Operations Analytics), but large analyst firms weren’t sold on it. So, after a lot of money spent, Gartner introduced AIOps—short for Algorithmic IT Operations. The win was bittersweet: 1️⃣ No one really liked the term. 2️⃣ The inaugural analyst report included both problem-solvers and problem-creators. Monitoring vendors—the very companies contributing to the data overload—were categorized alongside those trying to fix it. Then marketing took over, and suddenly, everyone forgot what “AI” originally stood for. #AIOps became a buzzword. At the time, I was working with PagerDuty. They asked if they should reposition under AIOps. My response? “Heck NO. That term is already confusing, and you’re not even doing that.” They agreed. But a few months later, they came back with a different tune: "Hey, we decided to build our messaging around AIOps. What reports do you have coming up?" Why the sudden shift? Customers started adding AIOps as a line item in their budgets. The first generation of AIOps failed miserably—to the point where early adopters got burned and became wary of automation altogether. Why AIOps 1.0 failed: 🚩 Overpromising, underdelivering – Pitched as a silver bullet for ITOps, but research showed just 66% average accuracy 🚩 Black-box ML models – Lack of transparency and control for users 🚩 Long time-to-value 🚩 Labor-intensive deployment and management Then #AI hype revived interest in AIOps—but the original problems remained. 📊 DEJ’s research shows: 🔹 64% of organizations cite incident prediction and prevention as the top area for improving AIOps solutions. This brings me to my recent briefing with Grokstream LLC—a company that was built to address this exact challenge. There were several things that stood out in their approach—from a neuroscience-based model for processing, clustering, and classification to effectively combining unsupervised and supervised #MachineLearning and eliminating manual rule-writing. More importantly, their model was built differently to address a longstanding key goal of managing IT performance: preventing issues before users are impacted. 📊DEJ’s research shows: 💸 $43.32M/year – Average business loss due to an inability to proactively prevent performance issues Forget about AIOps and its journey for a second.
