Breaking News: North Korean Hackers Just Stole $1.5 Billion From a Crypto Exchange to Fund Its Nuclear Weapons Program. Caveat Emptor Everyone! Crypto exchange Bybit just announced that it was hacked, resulting in at least $1.5B worth of crypto in the biggest financial heist of any kind ever committed in history. https://lnkd.in/eW4gGq5M This is not just devastating for Bybit’s customers, it’s also a national security emergency. Analysts have linked the attack to North Korea’s Lazarus Group, known for exploiting crypto-security vulnerabilities to finance North Korea’s regime and bankroll nuclear weapons programs. https://lnkd.in/eNp7cdFN Bybit’s customers? SOL. For crypto-exchanges, there’s no regulatory oversight; no consumer protections; no net capital reqts; no licensure of individuals; no US audits, inspections or examinations; no segregation of customer funds; no insurance, no cybersecurity reqts; no transparency; no accountability; no SEC/FDIC/OCC/etc. engagement and the list goes on. Crypto’s customers risk losing everything without any recourse. Bybit's Response? Panic. Bybit is scrambling to manage a bank-run and working to recover the stolen crypto from North Korea. Well, good luck with that. The Lesson? Twofold. First off, the Bybit heist is just another day in the Walking Dead-like anarchical global capital marketplace of the cryptoverse. It isn’t that the fox is guarding the chicken coop – it’s that no one is guarding the chicken coop. Second, and even more importantly, the Bybit hack shows that when intermediaries don’t register, it’s not just investors who get hurt. The anarchical business model of the cryptoverse also creates mammoth global financial systemic risks and terrifying national security dangers, which are threats to everyone, everywhere. The Stark Reality? The lunatics are running the asylum. The SEC is shutting down all crypto-related investigations and litigation, including their winning cases against crypto-exchanges Coinbase and Binance. Yes, you read that right -- the SEC's crypto-enforcement program has been unilaterally and wholly dismantled by Acting SEC Chair Mark Uyeda. You just can't make this stuff up. https://lnkd.in/etQ48J_E Meanwhile, crypto enthusiasts like Acting Chair Uyeda deride the U.S. Government for stifling innovation and forcing crypto operations offshore, asserting that the U.S. marketplace will somehow lose out on the wonderment, innovation and technological transformation that crypto creates.
