How can you use media monitoring to avoid PR crises?
When you're dealing with big data (thousands of mentions of your brand, representatives, products, initiatives, and competitors) it can be really difficult to analyze it all. Often the Media Monitoring tools you're using wont be built to analyze the coverage as much as they are to help you get a high level understanding of what's occurring, while having the ability to drill into specific tweets, articles, and clips from TV, Radio etc. Ultimately not much analysis can happen without... *drumroll* ANALYSTS.. Analysts will help surface insights you can bring to the boardroom. Tangible business insights that tie to broader organizational objectives and prove the value of PR & Comms. How can you use media monitoring to avoid PR crises?
Start by framing what Inputs, Activities and Outputs you've done or arranged for your campaign. That includes planning, producing & distributing information. Then, look at the Outcomes from your audiences. In other words the reception, reaction & responses. This includes short term & long term changes to thinking (Outtakes) and note that this all occurs with various Stakeholders & Publics. What happens as a result of those Outcomes is called IMPACT. That's all stuff you can notice happening in Society, in your Industry, Policy or even in the Economy... Follow this framework to properly evaluate the impact. How can you use media monitoring to avoid PR crises?
It's also useful to take the media data about your own brand, and compare it to your competitors & peers. One of the Metrics/KPIs to analyze is called "Reputational Drivers". It's the same as other Key Messages, but these are areas that are broadly universal across an organization, and common among your competitors and peers. Some examples could include Leadership, Staff & Workplace, Sustainability, Products & Services, Financial Performance, and Innovation. Think of Reputational Drivers as a means to put your coverage into buckets. Analyze the sentiment of the coverage, the journalists & publications, and see if your competitors are experiencing the same. So much more to analyze, but I hope the readers find this Metric/KPI useful to track!
