What would readers of the medical journal, The Lancet Group, learn about Psyence Biomedical Ltd 's Scientific Advisory Board? That one of our founding board members, Dr. Dan Stein "Professor and Chair of psychiatry at the University of Cape Town (UCT) is a psychiatric polymath. After training in psychiatry he completed a fellowship in psychopharmacology, as well as doctorates in both clinical neuroscience and philosophy. There is a parable attributed to the ancient Greek poet Archilochus, the subject of an essay, The Hedgehog and the Fox, by philosopher Isaiah Berlin. Borrowing from the precept: “The fox knows many things, but the hedgehog knows one big thing”, Stein reflects: “I think about and try to problem solve a range of different things. . . " Stein identifies as a fox. Stein was born in Johannesburg, South Africa, into a family of several doctors, “Then there was my father [...] he was very skeptical about medicine and a strong advocate of healthy eating and exercising.” Stein attended medical school at UCT, which afforded him a deferment of military service. There he took extra humanities courses, majored in biochemistry and psychology for an intercalated degree, and left for the USA shortly after graduation. He did his psychiatry training at Columbia University in New York, with additional training in schema therapy, bringing cognitive behavioural therapy and psychodynamic ideas together. Stein did his fellowship at Columbia University in the Anxiety Disorders Clinic, working with his mentor Eric Hollander (Albert Einstein College of Medicine, NY, USA), on the obsessive compulsive spectrum disorders, but shifted to post-traumatic stress disorder, in response to what was happening in South Africa at that time. When compulsory military service ended with the new democratic government, Stein and his South African wife returned home. Under Stein's leadership, UCT has become one of the leading departments of psychiatry in the low-income and middle-income world. His own collaborations reflect his wide ranging interests, extending across the continent and globe, addressing a range of basic, clinical, and public mental health issues. He points to the Drakenstein Child Health Study initiated by his wife, Heather Zar as an exemplary integration of clinical neuroscience and global mental health. Stein has been consistently dedicated to strengthening African mental health policy, clinical services.
