Kotai Energy is unlocking the potential of Australia’s Hydrogen Export market by combining scientific innovation with commercial objectives. We are enhancing existing technologies to drive down production costs and increase efficiencies.

Kotai Energy is partnering with the Australian Government and leading research institutions in hydrogen generation, storage and transport to develop a green hydrogen export market.

Technology & Process

We have developed a hydrogen-rich powder, called ‘sodium borohydride’ that allows safe and cost effective global export of hydrogen. Most importantly, it releases hydrogen when simply added to water. We can store energy in our sodium borohydride powder by adding renewable energy to a chemical processing route.

Professor Craig Buckley

Associate Professor Mark Paskevicius

Senior Research Fellow in the Fuels and Energy Technology Institute, whose research is focused on renewable energy storage and developing new materials for solid-state hydrogen storage, 10 years’ experience in synthesising borohydrides

Dr Terry Humphries

Inorganic chemist focusing on metal-hydrides for hydrogen storage applications. Dr Humphries excels in the synthesis of novel air/moisture sensitive compounds and their subsequent characterization using a variety of analytical methods including X-ray and neutron diffraction, multi-nuclear NMR and vibrational spectroscopy.

Dr Peter O Conghaile

Research Fellow at the Faculty of Science and Engineering Curtin University specialising in bioelectrochemistry. Dr O Conghaile is an electrochemist with a focus on fuel cell and sensor applications. His background lies in the synthesis and characterisation of novel materials using several different analytical techniques. He is also involved in the development of new biological and chemical sensors.

Professor Buckley’s experience and leadership in hydrogen storage research stretches over more than 31 years. He is an Australian expert on the International Energy Agency Hydrogen Implementing Agreement Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) Task 40 (Energy storage conversion based on hydrogen); Australian Executive Committee member on the IEA Hydrogen TCP; Distinguished Professor, Department of Physics and Astronomy, Curtin University; and Head of the Curtin Hydrogen Storage Research Group.
