On average, every Luxembourgian drinks 5.31 cups per day, which adds up to 118,227 cups over their lifetime - much more than Finland, the runner-up with 3.77 cups per day and 83,939 cups over a lifetime.

The prevalence of European countries in the top ten - including Sweden, Norway, Austria, and Denmark - suggests that coffee has become an integral part of the European lifestyle and culture. The immense gap between Luxembourg and the other countries may point to unique cultural or social attitudes towards coffee in Luxembourg.

On the other hand, countries renowned for their coffee consumption, such as the United States, Australia, and Japan, are ranked relatively low, with the U.S. at 24th place. This could be due to varying preferences and consumption patterns in these countries, such as the preference for larger single servings of coffee in the U.S. compared to smaller, more frequent servings in Europe.

Interestingly, the list also includes non-traditional coffee-consuming countries such as Lebanon and Brazil, which could be attributed to the global spread of coffee-related business and culture

Denmark has the highest average coffee price at $5.40, a reflection of its high living costs and taxation. Other European countries, like Switzerland, Norway, Finland, and Sweden, have similar rates due to their high living costs and preference for specialty coffee. Ethiopia and Colombia, two major coffee producers, have some of the lowest prices, which can be attributed to their favorable coffee-growing conditions and economic landscapes.

In the United States, the average price of coffee is $4.69, due to the country's high living standards and increasing demand for specialty coffee. In contrast, nations with developing economies, like Uganda, Haiti, and El Salvador, have lower prices, but the affordability is not necessarily reflected in their relative income levels.

The global coffee trade has an impact on prices too; Brazil and Vietnam, for example, have coffee prices that reflect their significant production capabilities and influence on market prices. This information shows that a variety of factors, including global trade policies, cultural trends, and economic conditions, affect the price of coffee.

Luxembourg notably leads with the highest lifetime coffee expenditure at $425,618. This substantial amount results from a combination of high coffee consumption, amounting to 118,227 cups, and a relatively high price per cup at $3.60. This indicates not only a strong coffee culture in Luxembourg but also a significant financial investment in this daily habit.

In contrast, Denmark and Switzerland, while having lower total coffee consumption compared to others, still see high lifetime spending due to their premium pricing per cup, at $5.40 and $5.00 respectively. This scenario highlights how higher prices, possibly influenced by living costs and a preference for luxury coffee experiences, can considerably elevate overall lifetime expenditure on coffee.

The data also underscores the impact of the cost per cup on total lifetime spending. Countries like Ireland, Australia, and Japan, despite consuming fewer cups of coffee, incur substantial lifetime costs due to higher prices per cup. This reflects the influence of local economic factors and consumer behavior, where a willingness to pay more for coffee significantly contributes to overall expenditure.

Canada and the United States also rank in the top 10 for lifetime coffee spending, suggesting coffee is not just a common habit but also a notable financial commitment in these nations. This trend is likely influenced by a combination of lifestyle choices, a strong coffee culture, and the presence of coffee chains that often command higher prices.

Hawaii has the highest per capita and total lifetime coffee consumption at 2.7 cups per day and 57,159 cups over a lifetime, respectively. This is mirrored in their highest lifetime expenditure of $266,933, which reflects the strong coffee culture in the state. On the other hand, Mississippi has the lowest daily consumption of 0.7 cups, a lifetime count of 14,819 cups, and the lowest lifetime expenditure of $61,054.

In addition, Alaska has the most expensive coffee at $4.73 per cup while Maine has the most affordable coffee at $3.52 per cup, indicating a large variation in coffee pricing between states.

California has the highest total coffee consumption with 245,381,424 KG, likely due to its large population size. Wyoming, with a much smaller population, has the lowest total coffee consumption at 3,785,425 KG.

CORRELATION BETWEEN
COFFEE CONSUMPTION & LIFE EXPECTANCY

correlation-between-coffee-consumption-life-expectancy

An analysis of the correlation between per capita coffee consumption and life expectancy across countries indicates a moderately positive correlation of around 0.577, suggesting there exists a slightly strong correlation between the two metrics.

Due to the moderately strong correlation, performing RA on those metrics suggests that each additional kilogram of coffee consumed per person annually could potentially raise life expectancy by 1.22%.

FULL DATA

Methodology

coffee-consumption-in-kilogram

Coffee Consumption In Kilogram

Coffee consumption figures were collected from International Coffee Organization.

coffee-consumption-per-capita

Coffee Consumption Per Capita

We divided the total coffee consumption in each country by its corresponding population. The population data for each country was sourced from Wikipedia.

daily-coffee-cups-per-capita

Daily Coffee Cups Per Capita

According to Wikipedia, each standard cup of coffee is prepared with 10.6 grams of ground coffee. To calculate the daily coffee consumption per capita in each country, we first translate the total coffee consumption per capita into grams. We then divide this total by 10.6 grams (the quantity required for a single cup) and subsequently divide by 365, the total number of days in a year. This method yields the average number of coffee cups consumed per person per day in each country.

lifetime-coffee-drinking-duration

Lifetime Coffee Drinking Duration

Our approach involved first determining the global average age at which individuals begin drinking coffee, based on survey responses and online data from 4,000 people globally. We then calculated the duration of coffee consumption for each country by subtracting this average starting age from the respective country's life expectancy. This method yielded an estimate of the total years an average person in each country spends enjoying coffee, providing a distinctive view of international coffee drinking trends.

lifetime-coffee-cup-consumption

Lifetime Coffee Cup Consumption

The total lifetime coffee cup consumption was estimated by first multiplying the 'Daily Coffee Cups Per Capita' by 365 to determine annual consumption, and then multiplying this figure by the 'Lifetime Coffee Drinking Duration' for each country.

coffee-consumption-life-expectancy-correlation

Coffee Consumption And Life Expectancy Correlation

We analyzed the correlation using two metrics coffee consumption and life expectancy, and then performed regression analysis to come up with the expected percentage per unit of consumption.
