Alberta’s major carbon capture project revs up. Pathways Alliance’s request for proposals from pipe manufacturers (http://spr.ly/6049sJnZc) and talks with Ottawa (http://spr.ly/6041sJnZl) on funding, signal progress on the long-awaited project. Proposed by six major oilsands companies, the $16.5 billion CCS project (http://spr.ly/6042sJnZm) involves transporting carbon from 20 oilsands facilities by pipeline to a storage terminal in Alberta’s Cold Lake area, reducing emissions by 22 megatonnes a year, or around 10% of sector emissions. Thrilled to announce some critical new supporters for Varme Energy's flagship Edmonton project today. We've added Canada Growth Fund and Gibson Energy as project investors, with Gibson also providing land & operations services to the asset. Canada Growth Fund has stepped up with a 200,000 tonne per year carbon credit offtake agreement on a 15 year term, fundamentally de-risking our projects carbon economics. My favourite feature of our CCO with CGF is that they've enabled us to pull out up to 100,000 tonnes per year of our bio-energy carbon capture and storage credits (BECCS). These removals credits are the most in-demand commodity we sell, and small volume global prices for BECCS have been $200-300/tonne+. A full purchase agreement with an ability to chase prices for partial volumes is very project friendly. Today's announcement sets the foundation for our first asset. The Calgary Green Line LRT project, intended as a transformative transit initiative, has faced significant challenges and is now regarded as a multibillion-dollar failure. A bus-only rapid transit line was first conceived but it expanded into a full LRT project. Over 10 years it suffered cost overruns, design changes, and political disputes. Several factors contributed to the project’s unraveling: Escalating Costs - Budgeted at $5.5 billion, the Green Line's cost escalated to over $6.2 billion. City officials scaled back the project, removed key stations and shortened the line, reducing projected ridership from 55,000 to 32,000 daily users. Political and Funding Issues - Both provincial and federal governments limited their financial contributions to the project, leaving the City of Calgary to cover the overruns. When the provincial government withheld a $1.53 billion share of the funding, the city was left scrambling to either revise or terminate the project. Complex Scope: The project's complexity, including plans for an underground downtown section and integration with future regional transit, added to its difficulties. Portions of the route and key stations were deferred or canceled, leaving many communities unserved. The city decided to wind down the project, with costs of over $2.1 billion already sunk. The Green Line now stands as an example of the difficulties cities face in delivering large-scale infrastructure projects amid fluctuating budgets, political disagreements, and changing urban planning priorities. What lessons must be learned from this, and similar infrastructure projects? I have no direct knowledge of the Calgary Project; however, the content of recent articles in the Calgary press brought to mind the key themes found in the book “How Big Things Get Done” (Bent Flyvbjerg and Dan Gardner), which are: 1. Optimism Bias - The tendency to be overly optimistic about timelines, costs, and potential hurdles, leading to a chronic underestimation of the true scope of a project. 2. Strategic Misrepresentation - How projects become bogged down in politics or marketing, where stakeholders misrepresent data to secure approval or funding, often resulting in unrealistic budgets and schedules. 3. Planning Fallacy - Where project estimates fail to account for real-world complexities, such as unexpected technical challenges or changes in market conditions. 4. Modular, Incremental Approach - The book advocates for a more flexible, iterative approach to project planning, where teams work in smaller, manageable stages. Experts estimate modest drop in 2023 emissions, with big differences across sectors The latest Early Estimate of National Emissions (EENE) from the Canadian Climate Institute shows a modest improvement in national emissions in 2023, with a drop of about 1 per cent from 2022 levels. Progress was uneven across sectors, with electricity showing large drops in emissions while oil and gas emissions rose. The independent estimate finds Canada’s emissions now sit at 8 per cent below 2005 levels, the baseline year for Canada’s 2030 emissions target of a 40 to 45 per cent reduction. Strong economic growth in 2023 pushed emissions up by 8.6 Mt CO2e from the previous year. However, the impact of climate policy and changing markets, including accelerating clean energy technology deployment, succeeded in reducing emissions by 14.2 Mt, resulting in an overall net decrease of 5.6 Mt. Time for a hydrogen economy in the new west=BC/AB/SK/MB fueled by natural gas and using the philosophy energy innovator Rodney Allam has advocated in these two recent uses of natural gas for cleaner than coal energy-NET Power for emission free electricity and 8RH2 for producing hydrogen/ammonia from natural gas. Eliminate the emissions in the use of oil and gas, not the oil and gas industry itself!

It was great attending the B.C. Centre for Innovation and Clean Energy (CICE) #Converge2024 conference earlier this week and hearing about the exciting roadmap ahead for B.C. to be a global leader in clean energy! The announcements about early-stage company funding and BC Hydro's partnership for energy storage were especially promising. 🌱⚡ Jonah Goldman from Generate kicked things off with a blunt and insightful assessment of the current capital markets. His challenge to cleantech companies? Demonstrate a clear path to commercialization, even at the origin stage. A critical reminder for anyone navigating this space! Parham Peiroo then moderated a thought-provoking panel on what local climate-focused private and public financial backers are looking for when making investment decisions. Spoiler alert: it echoed Jonah’s comments—companies need to show a tangible route to revenue and customer growth to stand out. Finally, Todd Sayers led a fantastic panel of local industry leaders, exploring how to collaborate with established players like Canfor, Teck Resources Limited, Shell, and BC Hydro. The key takeaway? Early-stage companies have the agility and innovation to bring value but often aren’t fully prepared to capitalize on these opportunities when they arise. This resonates deeply with our experience.
