🐼 We’re proud to announce that the Critical Minerals Association (UK) has joined the World Wildlife Fund’s CLEANaction coalition. ⚡ CLEANaction — the Coalition Linking Energy And Nature for Action — unites organisations committed to ensuring that the global transition to clean energy goes hand-in-hand with protecting our planet’s biodiversity. 🔋 Critical minerals are the foundation of renewable energy technologies — from wind turbines and electric vehicles to solar panels and geothermal power. But as we work to secure responsible supply chains, we must also ensure that extraction, processing, manufacturing and associated infrastructure are developed with nature in mind. CLEANaction promotes renewable energy projects that minimise environmental harm and prioritise biodiversity-friendly solutions. This matters now more than ever: 🌱 73% decline in biodiversity since 1970 💰 US$44 trillion (half the world’s GDP) relies on nature At the CMA (UK), we believe the energy transition must be a nature-positive transition. Through CLEANaction, we’ll work alongside global partners to champion best practices, knowledge-sharing, and science-based decision-making for projects in the critical minerals sector. 🤝 Let’s build a future where clean energy and thriving ecosystems go hand-in-hand. How the energy transition is resourced will define whether it delivers shared prosperity — or repeats the mistakes of the past. In September of 2024, the UN Secretary-General’s Panel on Critical Energy Transition Minerals published "Resourcing the Energy Transition: Principles to guide critical energy transition minerals toward equity and justice" (read it here: https://lnkd.in/dJciuaay). As advisor to the Panel and pen-holder of the report, I saw up close the concern that many developing country panel members held about whether mineral demand for the energy transition would indeed be a repeat of the mistakes of the past. Since the report’s release, I’ve been supporting the UN Secretary-General’s Working Group on Transforming the Extractive Industries for Sustainable Development to turn those principles into practice. We are now pleased to share the "UN Guidance for Action on Critical Energy Transition Minerals" – a practical, “living” resource that: * Unpacks each principle in detail * Points to global standards, policies, and case studies * Showcases real-world programmes and partnerships * Profiles insightful contributions from scores of UN agencies and member states Explore the guidance here: https://lnkd.in/dykQY2tz This guidance is designed to help governments, industry, and communities align mineral supply for the energy transition with equity and justice – and it will be updated over time as knowledge grows. If you work in mining, energy, policy, or sustainable development, we’d love for you to share this resource with your colleagues and partners. Remember when lithium hit US$80,000/t in late 2022? Fast forward to today and prices have fallen to around US$10,000/t - even dipping below US$9,000/t in June. What's driving this dramatic reversal? - Supply growth is massively outpacing demand - Chinese production has ramped up significantly - Producers responded to 2021-22 supply calls, but new capacity is only hitting markets now Our latest analysis shows oversupply will persist until at least 2027, making most production uneconomic. The industry faces a critical choice: build costly inventories or curtail production. Demand remains strong (especially for lithium carbonate in LFP batteries), but the market needs decisive action to address the surplus. Want the full picture? Today, we are delighted to announce the conclusion of and successful results from recent 60-day long term pump tests and demonstration scale Direct Lithium Extraction (DLE) trials at our lithium in brines project in Co. Durham, Northeast of England. Read the full press release here at https://lnkd.in/e3Pr65Zy The highlights of our announcement are: • Further confirmation of consistent, economically viable concentrations of lithium in brines at relatively shallow drilling depths with strong flow rates and significant long-term yield potential • 1:15 scale DLE plant designed, constructed, installed and operated at Ludwell Farm, Co. Durham by Evove and RSE • >300 hours of stable operation in production mode and 3.5 million litres of Northern Lithium live brines processed • Strong DLE trial results with 92% end-to-end lithium recovery rates achievable and 96.5% purity of lithium chloride/sulphate product produced • Detailed design engineering for first operational production unit now underway to meet target date of first commercial lithium supply from end of 2027. • Discussions underway with potential off-take and industry partners • Excellent fundraising progress, with GBP3.45 million first tranche closed above expectations • Marketing for a second tranche of up to a further GBP2.5 million to start shortly Nick Pople, Northern Lithium Managing Director, said, “The results of these recent trials are a great step forward for our unique partnership established to deliver a secure, sustainable supply of lithium for the UK using Northern Lithium’s UK lithium brines, Evove’s UK developed advanced DLE technology and RSE’s UK process engineering expertise.” “We have made considerable progress over the past year and are pleased that our recent long term pump tests and demo scale DLE trials have provided further proof of concept on our targeted path to first commercial production of lithium by the end of 2027. In the current geopolitical climate, it is encouraging that the UK government is recognising that the UK has an urgent need to secure its own domestic lithium supply. The results of our recent tests and trials have confirmed that Northern Lithium now has the opportunity and potential to scale up supply, within the next decade, to significantly more than our current base case target of 10,000 tonnes of battery-grade lithium delivered per year from a series of production sites across the Northern Pennine Orefield.” #UKlithium #UKgrowth #Evove #Northernlithium #sustainability #manufacturing #DLE #directlithiumextraction #mineralextraction #netzerotransition #briningnotmining #criticalminerals #batterystorage #CountyDurham #Criticalmineralsstrategy #Industrialstrategy

#BreakingNews: A major milestone in the journey toward safer, more accountable mining. The appointment of the Global Tailings Management Institute inaugural board of directors marks a critical moment for our mining industry and the communities it affects. This announcement follows years of work by many—including those involved in the Investor Mining Tailings Safety Initiative, established in response to the Brumadinho disaster in January 2019. The GTMI now takes the baton, tasked with driving implementation of the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM) developed by the Initiative and overseeing independent assurance against it. This is about more than compliance—it’s about delivering zero harm to people and the environment, with zero tolerance for human fatality. Appointing Mark Cutifani (former CEO, Anglo American) as Chair and Vicente Mello (SVP, AECOM) as Deputy Chair is a powerful signal. These are leaders who deeply understand both the complexity of tailings and the urgency of reform. Equally important is the diversity of the board—drawing from Indigenous scholars, prosecutors, environmental scientists, investors, and industry experts. That kind of multi-stakeholder governance is key to rebuilding trust. This is a vital step change at a very important time for the mining industry. Strongly welcomed. 🔗 Read more and meet the board: www.thegtmi.org #Tailings #GISTM #SustainableMining #ESG #Brumadinho #GlobalMining #ZeroHarm #GTMI #ResponsibleMining #Nimrod Adam Matthews John Howchin Stephen Barrie The Church of England Rohitesh Dhawan
