According to the International Energy Agency (IEA)'s 2024 Global EV Outlook, globally there are almost ten times as many private chargers as public ones, with the majority of current EV charging taking place at home. The availability of charging varies widely between regions - however in Canada 80% of EV owners have a home charger. Despite the recent headlines about the Tesla Supercharging layoffs and wider rollout of DC fast charging infrastructure, the reality is that most charging takes place on Level 2 chargers for vehicles parked at home, work, or other convenient locations. With the average vehicle parked for 95% of the time, most charging can easily take place at a much slower rate - meaning that low-cost Level 1 and Level 2 charging is a practical way to improve #EV adoption and usage around the world. https://lnkd.in/eK5Hgy47 #electricvehicles #charging

BYD EV market entries: Canada, Uber and global. BYD is registered lobbyist with Canadian and Ontario governments. The Canadian government has consulted on tariffs on EVs from China and a decision is expected shortly. BYD and Uber have a multi-year strategic partnership to provide its EVs to Uber drivers in global markets. Beginning first in Europe and Latin America, the partnership is expected to offer drivers access to best-in-class pricing and financing for BYD vehicles on the Uber platform and will expand to include markets across the Middle East, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand. Ford Motor Co.'s decision to scrap plans for an electric vehicle hub in Canada so it can produce more gas-powered heavy-duty pickups instead says a lot about the state of today's auto market and the pressure to deliver profitable growth. While automakers say they're committed to electrification, they only make money on products customers want to buy. Trucks are hot, EVs are not. Ford announced yesterday that it's investing $3 billion to boost output of the Super Duty, the F-150's larger sibling that's popular with tradespeople and commercial customers. $2.3 billion of that will be spent to overhaul a factory in Oakville, Ontario, that was previously set to become an EV manufacturing hub. A three-row electric SUV that Ford had planned to build in Oakville is getting shelved until 2027, as the automaker announced back in April. About 1,800 Canadian jobs will be secured — 400 more than would have been needed to produce the three-row EV, Ford said. The pivot helped Ford solve two problems. The automaker needs the extra truck capacity to keep up with soaring demand; the two factories where it currently builds Super Duty trucks in Ohio and Kentucky are "running flat out," Ford said. There aren't enough customers for a three-row EV. Delaying the launch until 2027 will allow the market to mature and buy time for Ford to improve the product and take advantage of emerging battery technology, the company said. Follow the money: While Ford's EV unit lost $4.7 billion in 2023 (and is on track to lose even more this year), its Ford Pro commercial business earned $7.2 billion in 2023. With an estimated $20,000 per vehicle profit on the Super Duty, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why Ford is leaning into trucks for now. Like General Motors and other rivals, Ford has been backing off EV commitments as it becomes clear that the early adopter era is over. CEO Jim Farley is increasingly bullish on hybrids as a bridge technology — a strategy that has proven successful for Toyota — and Ford aims to offer hybrids across its entire lineup by 2030. Ford is moving ahead with plans to erect a new "Blue Oval City" EV manufacturing campus in Tennessee, while its rivals are converting older factories to EV production — with help from the Biden administration. GM and Stellantis scooped up a combined $1.1 billion in federal grants for such projects, while Ford didn't apply. Ford plans to begin customer deliveries of a new electric pickup truck built at Blue Oval City in 2026, a few months later than originally scheduled.

Vincentric has released an updated Canadian EV Cost of Ownership Analysis to provide insight into the cost-effectiveness of electric vehicles in Canada. The analysis investigated the ownership cost advantages and disadvantages of 50 EVs in eight different cost areas, as well as the environmental impact of EVs versus gasoline vehicles in Canada. This year’s analysis results found that 49 of 50 Canadian EVs had lower ownership costs than their gas-powered alternatives. I was wondering if BYD will make a move in Canada first. I think this type of competition is good to bring variety and selection to the local EV market, which continues to accelerate due to our consistently high gas prices. When the Japanese car manufacturers came to North America there were various trade barriers that were setup to attempt to block things. We all know how that ended up and with that, it got the domestic manufacturers to up their game to compete. Everyone benefitted from having affordable, quality built cars. Here are some key takeaway from various panel discussions held at Electric Autonomy's 2024 EV & Charging expo in Canada: ➡ Grid capacity constraints and delays in obtaining utility permits are the biggest bottleneck today for commercial fleet electrification. Wait-times are as long as 3 years to energize the infrastructure. Deploying chargers at distribution centres is disrupting daily operations significantly. One grocery retailer had to shut down their refrigerated warehouse multiple times just to assess the electrical panels. ➡Currently, using public charging networks for on-route fleet charging is a challenge because of technical integration complexity, payment reconciliation issues, and a lack of unified customer support. "Charging passport" solutions aim to integrate various public charging networks under one platform. ➡The smooth, quiet EV experience is encouraging aging drivers to delay retirement, increasing availability. Driver training has become a priority - a seasoned driver can reduce energy costs by up to 20% through regenerative braking. ➡Unlike gas, EV drivers aren't price sensitive - they're more concerned with availability, charging speed, and the overall experience when picking a charging station. They also prefer busy locations with ample lighting for safety reasons. ➡Support for electrification is coming from indirect entities like hotels located near transport corridors where guests benefit from the quieter electric trucks. ➡Big box retail stores make ideal locations for public EV charging hubs, attracting new customers whose dwell times align with typical shopping duration. The process of land acquisition has gotten more stringent in the last few years with more regulations in place, slowing down speed of deployment. Companies like Canadian Tire are treating charging stations as part of their real-estate strategy and less a “added amenity” project ➡Charging station designers learn from hotels and airports where people dwell longer, as EV drivers walk pets, go for a run, or socialize - very unusual activities at gas stations. Vacationers are seeing charging sessions at part of their overall travelling experience and companies need to cater to that expectation. At the same time, it is also critical to offer amenities that are universally appealing to all categories of customers. ➡EV adoption is 5X higher among rideshare drivers versus personal vehicles, with a 4X emission savings when rideshare owners go electric due to high mileage. Still, upfront costs and limited public charging remain barriers, hitting the rideshare owner demographic hard. Affordable incentives and lower charging rates for those w/o home charging will increase adoption. ➡For condos, properly sizing transformers is a challenge currently, with dynamic load balancing software a workaround for grid capacity issues.
