At Student Leadership Network, our Directors of College Counseling (DCCs) support students in all aspects of the #collegeapplication process, including applying for #financialaid and #scholarships. Organizations like QuestBridge and the The Posse Foundation offer full-tuition scholarships and tailored college transition support to students after an extensive application process. Our DCCs support students in this application process by helping review essays, conduct practice interviews, and more. “Ms. Joseph has shared both my excitement throughout this process and has helped me stay focused on my goals and what I want to achieve. I truly appreciate her so much for being so supportive of me.” -Sindy, a Posse scholar who will be attending Connecticut College, speaks about her Director of College Counseling, Diamond Joseph. Congratulations to the 18 QuestBridge and Posse Scholars in the Class of 2024! They will be attending Williams College, Northwestern University, Boston University, Dartmouth College, Vanderbilt University, Princeton University, Wesleyan University, Colgate University, The Johns Hopkins University, Amherst College, Smith College, Brandeis University, Middlebury College, Connecticut College, and California Institute of the Arts. Hosted at the University of Mount Saint Vincent's campus, 11th-grade students from CBI schools across NYC met with 48 college admissions representatives from various public and private colleges and universities and #postsecondarypathways. The CBI Collaborative College Fair is a chance for students to learn about different college pathways and what college admissions representatives look for in a college application. In April, The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) students visited the United States Military Academy at West Point for a college exploration day hosted by the Amplify Her Foundation. Since then, Allison has been involved with various volunteer opportunities, including “TYWLS at the Workplace,” where students were hosted at the Apollo Global Management office, an alumni event where she helped alumni craft their #elevatorpitches, and Cool Careers, Potential Paths, our signature volunteer series. Ready, set, launch! The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. (ELC) recently hosted Project Beauty, a day of entrepreneurship and leadership activities for students at The Young Women’s Leadership School (TYWLS) of Manhattan. TYWLS students brainstormed ideas for a snack product and ways to market it. The day allowed students to leverage teamwork, receive and apply volunteer feedback, and practice their presentation and public speaking skills. They incorporated knowledge of social media and influencers they felt were relevant to their peers into their pitches. Initiatives like Project Beauty are part of ELC’s commitment to advancing possibilities for girls and allow employees to engage in Student Leadership Network’s mission of educational equity. Thank you to all of the day’s volunteers and to ELC for its longstanding partnership to create learning opportunities with Student Leadership Network! Jim McMahon first learned about Student Leadership Network from a friend at the O’Shea Family Foundation. As a #volunteer at Cool Careers, Potential Paths, Jim talked about his part-time job experience and how he pivoted his career in his 30s to become a #teacher. Jim advised students at The Young Women’s Leadership Schools (TYWLS) to consider the difference between a job and a career and always explore their passions. “I was thrilled to participate in Cool Careers with my wife Liz on our wedding anniversary. The number of volunteers in general and of women volunteers in particular who came to speak to the students exceeded my expectations.” -Jim Thank you for supporting our work in educational equity, Jim! This year’s #FAFSA rollout has not been simple or straightforward—the delay has caused headaches for many students and parents across the country. Ahmed, a Riverside Academy High School student in Buffalo, NY, recently testified about his experience with FAFSA delays at a Buffalo City Council meeting. “I’m still waiting for my FAFSA to be processed. I was one of the earlier ones to submit it on January 7th, I think.” -Ahmed Riverside Academy High School is a partner high school within Student Leadership Network’s College Access and Success program.
